about

Following the release of their second album, Guerilla Welfare (aka Brian Schultze and Curtis Ruptash) met Edmonton-based poet Mary Howes. They loved her powerful writing and amazing voice. She loved their disruptive blend of experimental and ambient sensibilities. The result was the 1991 release “Evidence I Was Here.

The album was released in cassette form as a companion to her book of poetry, “Vanity Shades”. While they were very happy with the master tracks, the publishing company didn’t get the cassette duplication quite right. For example, they used normal-type tape and applied a Dolby encoder on non-Dolby treated tracks, resulting in a duller sound with less low end than intended.

Following the sad passing of Brian Schultze in 2013, Curtis Ruptash had the master tapes of all three GW albums transferred to digital and released band’s full the catalog in 2016. After reconnecting with Mary Howes, Ruptash decided to get a proper analog remaster done of Evidence I Was Here. He enlisted mastering whiz Patrick Pritchett to take the original tape transfers and remaster them in his analog studio suite. The result was a restoration of the high/low frequencies plus bringing Mary’s voice up in the mix.

A digital booklet with Mary's poems is a bonus item with purchase.

Fans of Brian Eno, Dry Cleaning, Negativland and Woo will vibe on this release.

about

Guerilla Welfare Chicago, Illinois

Politico dub-collage practitioners Guerilla Welfare came from Edmonton, Alberta. They adopted the ‘studio as instrument’ mindset of Eno and King Tubby creating complex textural and polyrhythmic sonic insurgencies. Their DIY studio experimentations align them with genre defying dub-infused outfits like African Head Charge, Dome, Lifetones, Naffi, Woo, Negativland and The Residents. ... more
